About IDO
IDO
(Individuals Developing Others) was incorporated and recognized as a 501 (c)(3) non
profit organization in November 1997. IDO's
primary focus was to offer youths expanded learning opportunities. Our
intent was to promote academic success to youths at risk of dropping out of school. We
offered an alternative to failing grades by utilizing interventions in English, Math,
Reading, Computer Literacy, Typing Skills, College Preparation, College Planning,
and Tutoring.
In 1997, 25 of the 50 students were in danger of failing
their current grade. By
1999, we had 50 students enrolled in our program and we were excited by the improvement
in their grades, behavior, and attitudes. As
their grades improved, their academic performance continued to show steady stability
and consistency. By mid-year, we developed
a partnership with Jefferson Parish Juvenile Division to render tutorial services
to problem youths. One teen was sentenced
to two years probation. Her only option
to reduce her sentence was to enroll into a tutorial program and to improve her grades. Her
parole officer gave her permission to enroll into IDO. Upon
successfully completing our program, her probation would be reduced from two years
to six months. She
completed the program, graduated from high school and has started a family.
By the end of the school year, in May 2000, grades continued
to increase and the students began to excel academically.
The student's average GPA went from 2.72 to 2.93 in just four quarters.
Some of their accomplishments were: Honor Roll, Highest Grade Point Average In The
7th Grade, USAA Mathematics Award At Livaudais Middle School, Eagle Of The Month At
Eisenhower Elementary, Most
Improved Math Student-John Ehret High School, 1st Place In An Essay Contest, Principal
And Superintendent Award At Harry S. Truman Middle, Most
Improved Student At Miller Wall Elementary, Recipient Of The President's Education
Award Signed By President Bill Clinton At C.T. Janet Middle, and one 32 year old adult
received her GED After Being Out Of High School For Over Sixteen Years.
Excited about the academic achievements of our students, IDO hosted "Knowledge Is
Power: Learn Today, Earn Tomorrow" College Scholarship on October 14, 2000 at the
John A. Alario Events Center. We
awarded $10,000.00 in college scholarships to area high school seniors. Two
of the five recipients were students from our program. IDO
collaborated with area high schools, the community, local businesses, and individual
partners.
Currently, IDO would
like to continue service to the communities of St. Charles Parish and surrounding
communities. New Life Family Center
will give us the opportunity to provide families with positive experiences and the
necessary tools to achieve success in their lives. Ultimately, we will provide
a place where young people, seniors, and families can build lasting, positive
change in their lives."
